The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
