Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
