Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, following the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
